A Step-by-Step Guide for Aussies Ready to Take the Plunge
Dreaming of a cool, affordable backyard pool? Stock tank pools are the fast, budget-friendly way to make it happen—no major building required. Here’s how to choose, install, and enjoy your own, the Aussie way.
➡ Most popular sizes: 6ft (1.8m) for couples, 8ft (2.4m) for families.
➡ Choose galvanized steel for classic style, or stainless for extra durability.
➡ You’ll need a good filter/pump, a secure cover, a chlorine floater, and a pool test kit.
➡ Prep a flat, sunny spot, check local council rules, and make sure you’ve got legal fencing sorted.
“Install it right, enjoy it all summer—your stock tank pool is ready when you are.”
Your Installation Checklist—From Delivery to First Swim
1. Choose Your Tank & Accessories
Pick a size that fits your space and needs (6ft/8ft round, or compact oval).
Essential gear: Filter pump (1,500–3,000 GPH), marine-grade fittings, pool cover, cleaning kit, chlorine floater, test kit.
2. Prepare Your Site
Clear and level the ground—use paver sand or crushed rock for a stable base.
Make sure your spot is well-drained and has sun/shade.
Never install on decks—the weight is huge when filled.
3. Legal & Safety Musts
Pools over 300mm deep need fencing (min. 1.2m high) and often a building permit.
Pool gate must be self-closing and latching.
All pool electrics must be installed by a licensed electrician with RCD protection.
Check local council for specific rules and required inspections.
4. Install Your Pool
Place your tank, re-check that it’s level.
Drill holes for inlet and outlet—use marine-grade sealant and the right fittings.
Install the filter pump and connect hoses. Run a test for leaks and circulation.
Fill slowly and check everything’s working as you go.
5. Set Up Water & Safety
Use a filter on your hose for the first fill if possible.
Balance chemicals (pH 7.2–7.6, chlorine, and stabiliser).
Install pool cover and make sure all fencing and gates work perfectly.
6. Ongoing Care
Run pump 2–4 hours a day (longer in summer).
Skim debris daily, vacuum weekly, test water weekly.
Replace filter cartridges monthly in summer.
Use pool noodles or foam on the metal rim for comfort.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Don’t skip ground levelling—it can lead to cracks and leaks.
Never add chlorine tablets directly to the metal—always use a floater.
Don’t forget pool fencing compliance—even for small, above-ground tanks.
